More Understanding

More Understanding

Summer on the Green River Washington State.

I have found that when I was younger due to the fact that I was very driven my tolerance for a substandard work ethic was very low ans as result I used to have a very short fuse. And I never thought that I would change. But thank fully I did and what has happened as I have become older is that my ability to see the other persons point of view has increased and I see things in life more clearly. One of the biggest factors to bring about this change is my wife (we have been married for just on 49 years). And because we have faced our life’s journey together in everything we did she has always been able to keep me grounded. And the result is that we enjoy our retirement more and more each day.

This brings me back to having a better and deeper understanding of the others who we deal with daily in our lives. I have found that there are only two paths available to us one of complaining and everything is wrong, and the alternate path the delight to be here on the very beautiful earth of ours, and enjoying good health and with a companion whom you have shared every experience for the past 52 years. I choose to take the second route and one of the things I noticed is that because the news and the media are so filled with what is euphemistically called “Good Reporting or Good Television” we are constantly bombarded with negative pictures or reports of life. It appears that we tend to dwell on the things that are (we feel) are going wrong with out actually having a solution in mind. It is always seems to be some ones fault. Heaven forbid it is my fault, or that I suggest that we an fix or repair the problem by taking the following actions. And because of all of this I now feel that I see things in a clearer light. It might be of course that some of the things that used to upset me now have fallen in the scale of importance to me and what I do every day in my daily life.

One of the problems in the way the news is reported is that when there is insufficient report worthy content we feel the need to make the news and that is where the negative reporting come in because the reporters then become a part of the news because they are offering opinions in carefully guarded language. I tried an experiment recently and decided not to read any newspapers or watch the news and you know what the world did not stop and when I started to catch again I found very little had passed that mattered. So my conclusion is that much of this is “white noise” and it has no value. Having discovered what used to get my motor going I now look on life through an entirely different prism. And some times it can be a kaleidoscope where the pretty patterns and colors give us an entirely different view of our world.

About seftonoxford

I am an engineer and have worked all over the world. But now my wife Elaine and I have settled in the Pacific North West where we can enjoy the great outdoors and enjoy all that the PNW has to offer. And for my part I can use my expertise by making myself available to large and small business.

  1. Well said Sefton and from my perspective true. Mary and I have been married 35 years (newly weds compared to you guys) and we have never had a television in our home. We raised 5 children without TV and they all have college degrees and jobs. When we shut down the white noise that we have no control over and instead fill it with reading, talking and researching the important stuff that we want to exercise control over., we become contributors rather than spectators.
